Producing your own electricity on your roof is one of the best-supported kinds of work in Luxembourg. What remains is to know what your roof allows, in what order to proceed, and who should fit the panels. This guide answers all three; for the amount, it takes you to the official calculator.
Is your roof at the end of its life? Deal with that first: the insulation guide explains why the envelope comes first.
Modules fitted on the roof convert sunlight into direct current. An inverter turns it into the alternating current of your domestic installation. Whatever you consume as it is produced is self-consumption; the rest goes onto the grid.
Power is measured in kilowatt-peak. It is chosen on your actual consumption, not on the available surface: an oversized array mostly produces surplus, an undersized one covers nothing. That is the first trade-off to settle with the installer.
Grid connection and its declaration are a matter for your network operator. The installer handles it in most cases; ask for that to be written into the quote, together with commissioning and warranties.
| Compared on | Photovoltaics Quote (Photovoltaics) | Solar Thermal Panels Quote (Solar Thermal Panels) | Energy Storage Battery Quote (Energy Storage Battery) |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it brings | Electricity | Hot water | A shift in when you consume |
| What you need | An unobstructed roof and an inverter | A storage tank | Generation already installed |
| The works | One to two days, on the roof | Roof and plant room | Plant room only |
| What changes day to day | Part of your electricity bill | Domestic hot water, sometimes heating backup | In the evening you use what you produced |
| The limit | Nothing at night, little under heavy cloud | Produces no electricity | Does not increase what you produce |
We show no amounts on these pages, and that is deliberate: a copied scale becomes wrong without warning its reader. The official tool is updated at source; that is where amounts, ceilings and conditions are to be read.

The information published here is indicative and does not commit Wedo. It describes public schemes whose rules, conditions and amounts change over time.
For any figure and for filing an application, the official pages of Klima-Agence and of your municipal administration are what count.
For a solar photovoltaic system, with or without a domestic battery, you do not have to advance the Klimabonus subsidy and then wait for the State to pay it out. The installer deducts it directly from the final invoice.
The scheme only works with an installer entered in the register of installers eligible for pre-financing, kept up to date by the Ministry of the Economy. That is the first thing to check, before signing anything.
The application for aid is filed by the installer on behalf of the beneficiary, not by you. On your side, you fill in a mandate form which the installer sends to the Ministry of the Economy.
The subsidy and every down payment already made must be clearly stated on the final invoice and deducted from the total. The down payment the installer may ask of you before that invoice is capped, and the cap is given on the official page.
Who can benefit. The beneficiary is the owner of the residential building, or the person holding immovable property rights on it. In a co-ownership, it is the managing agent or a co-owner appointed by the general meeting. A business whose activity requires a business permit is precluded.
The full conditions, deadlines and caps are on Guichet.lu, the official source, and that is the link to open before signing.
Due south remains the most favourable case, but an east-west roof lends itself very well to self-consumption. What often weighs more is the shadow of a chimney or a tree: it is measured on site, not on a map.
Removing and refitting an array to redo the roof underneath costs far more than doing both in one go. Have the roof looked at by a roofer before ordering the modules.
It is calculated on your consumption, hour by hour where possible, and on what you can move to the daytime. An installer who quotes without having seen a bill is not sizing. They are selling.
The connection point, the declaration to the network operator and commissioning are part of the job. Ask for them line by line in the quote, along with the electrical panel if it has to be reworked.
Make and model of modules and inverter, product and yield warranties, the company’s liability insurance, lead time. A price “per kilowatt-peak” without those items cannot be compared.
They all have a verified profile: each has an active subscription on the Wedo platform and meets our eligibility criteria.
