EV charging point in Luxembourg: charging at home, and who installs it

Charging at home is simpler and steadier than charging in town, on one condition: that the home’s electrical installation can keep up. This guide says what to check before ordering a charging point, and who to entrust the fitting to.

Is it right for you?

The scheme suits you if…

Yes if

  • You have a parking space of your own
  • You drive an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, already delivered or on order
  • An electrical supply can be reached from the panel

To check

  • The power available at the meter and the state of the electrical panel
  • The cable distance between the panel and the space
  • The rules of the building if the parking is shared

Look at this instead

Do you mostly charge during the day? The photovoltaics guide changes the equation: producing what you charge costs less than buying it back.

How it works

Not a socket: a dedicated circuit

A domestic socket and a wall box are not the same object. The wall box sits on its own circuit, with its own protection and its own residual-current device, sized for hours of continuous current, which a socket meant for a kettle never was.

Charging can be steered. The box talks to the meter, spreads the load across the night, and holds back when the oven and the hob are running. That is what stops a full charge from tripping the whole house.

When the panel dates back a few decades, bringing it up to standard comes first. An electrician checks the earthing, the protections and the available power, then says what has to be reworked before anything is ordered.

The figures, at source

What the support covers, and where to price it

We show no amounts on these pages, and that is deliberate: a copied scale becomes wrong without warning its reader. The official tool is updated at source; that is where amounts, ceilings and conditions are to be read.

  • What is covered: the charging point, its dedicated circuit and the protections it requires
  • Who pays: the State, under the Klimabonus; some municipalities add their own support
  • When: check your scheme’s prior-step rule before signing

Klima-Agence

The information published here is indicative and does not commit Wedo. It describes public schemes whose rules, conditions and amounts change over time.

For any figure and for filing an application, the official pages of Klima-Agence and of your municipal administration are what count.

Pre-financing

Not having to advance the subsidy

Pre-financing exists today for solar photovoltaic systems, with or without a domestic battery. The Klimabonus subsidy is then deducted directly from the final invoice by the installer, instead of being paid out later by the State.

You choose an installer listed in the register

The scheme only works with an installer entered in the register of installers eligible for pre-financing, kept up to date by the Ministry of the Economy. That is the first thing to check, before signing anything.

The installer files the application for you

The application for aid is filed by the installer on behalf of the beneficiary, not by you. On your side, you fill in a mandate form which the installer sends to the Ministry of the Economy.

The subsidy appears on the final invoice

The subsidy and every down payment already made must be clearly stated on the final invoice and deducted from the total. The down payment the installer may ask of you before that invoice is capped, and the cap is given on the official page.

Who can benefit. The beneficiary is the owner of the residential building, or the person holding immovable property rights on it. In a co-ownership, it is the managing agent or a co-owner appointed by the general meeting. A business whose activity requires a business permit is precluded.

The full conditions, deadlines and caps are on Guichet.lu, the official source, and that is the link to open before signing.

Before you sign

Five points to check

The power available at the meter

A charging point draws for hours. Before choosing a power rating, the electrician looks at what the meter allows once the rest of the house is running. It is the reading that decides the box, not the other way round.

The electrical panel and its upgrade

Earthing, protections, the residual-current device dedicated to the circuit: an older panel rarely accepts a charging point as it stands. Have the compliance work costed at the same time, not afterwards.

The cable run and the distance

Between the panel and the parking space there are metres, walls and sometimes a courtyard. The length dictates the cross-section, the cross-section dictates the price. Have the route measured on site before signing anything.

Steering the charge

A steered box charges when electricity is cheapest and holds back when the house is drawing hard. Ask what the box actually steers, and whether the function still works without a subscription.

The quote: protections, commissioning, warranty

Make and model, dedicated circuit, protections, commissioning and the handover of documents belong in the quote, item by item. A charging point fitted without a written report cannot be checked later.

Frequently asked questions

Charging at home: the questions we are asked

For an occasional top-up, sometimes. For daily use, no: a socket was never designed to carry current for hours on end. A wall box on a dedicated circuit charges faster and, above all, ages far better.
Not always, but it must be looked at. Earthing, protections and available power are checked before any box is ordered. Compliance work is costed at the same time so that nothing is discovered on the day of fitting.
It depends on the building’s rules and on the existing installation. The electrician draws up a report on what the shared supply allows; that report is what the co-owners then discuss. Start with the survey, not with the order.
Yes, and that is often the point. A steered box can favour the hours when the roof is producing. The photovoltaics guide explains what the installation must allow for that to work.
No. Wedo is the directory and quote platform of the Fédération des Artisans. Grants are processed and paid by the Luxembourg State and, where applicable, by your municipality. Our role stops at the tradesperson: we connect you, free of charge, with the companies in the directory.
